A few short years ago IBM and Sun didn't even compete in the same league. Now you say Gerstner considers Sun his main competitor. That, to me, is amazing.

If Sun takes away only a small fraction of IBM's business it will grow enough to make me rich.

JMHO.

IBM has always had the total solution but that didnt stop the company from being decimated at one time or another in almost all of its business:
Database Software - Oracle, Informix
PC Operating systems - Microsoft
PC's - Compaq, Dell, etc.
Storage - EMC
Mainframes - Hitachi, Amdahl
Unix Servers - Sun, HP
microprocessors - Intel

I think analysts are conveniently overlooking IBM's slow growth rates, and declining HW revenue to spin it as a "safe" internet play. Remember, nobody gets fired for recomending IBM..
