Fenian fire:

I wasn't around when Washington burned, but I do remember the monument in the cemetery and the historical bronze plate mounted on the east side of it telling the story of the brave souls buried there. I don't know if it was an accurate history, but, I would think that the story would have some truth or the families would have raised some objection at the time.

On the other hand, we're dealing with Irish people here. They ALL seem to have a bit of Blarney and love a good story. I also wouldn't be surprised if they burned down a White pub and not the White House.

But then again, I watched a PBS documentary about the refurbishing of the White House and how they had to match stonework quarried at different locations because the original wasn't available for making repairs "After the Fenians set the place on fire." I don't pretend to study history, at my age I usually remember it!

Cheers, PW.
