If CSCO can't deliver the 45Mbps switch fabric AND OC48 interfaces by calendar Q4, they've cut their own throats. However, I don't expect Chambers and co. to let that happen. Big global contract awards at MCI/WorldCom and AT&T will be given in that time frame, and as you said, timing is everything.

Also, it is very true that incumbents have an advantage - witness NN, which has tenaciously defended its installed base, winning follow-on contracts despite a technical solution that many in the industry - carrier customers, competitors - that I have talked to feel does not compare to the BSTDX9000/CBX500/GX550 line up. Similarly, Cisco's MGX8850 and even Nortel's Passport15000 should give the 36170 team a serious headache. When you talk to a Cisco salesperson, they say that ASND is company with whom they are going head-to-head. ASND gives the same grudging respect to Cisco.

All and all, I'd rather have ASND's (or even NN's) incumbent positions than CSCO's, but the game is far from over.
