I finally managed to give Q3 a spin. My impression is that it appears to be a first person shooter.

Running around shooting at strangers has an undeniable adrenal thrill to it but it is the same thrill that Unreal and all the id predecessors delivers. I was at a friends house playing 1-on-1 Half-Life last week on his LAN (notice how we are becoming 2 PC families?) and I found that game had a little more to offer. Trip-mines, hand grenades and crossbows gave it a bit more character <g>. I would still rather beat someone on a virtual racetrack.

My friend was grateful for some decent competition because up 'til that point he had only played against his 8 year old daughter. He found that the thrill diminished when she found herself cornered and begged "don't kill me, daddy." Well, that sounds sicker that it was in reality but he soon learnt not to turn his back on her.
