EDAT is Electronic Direct Access Trading, where your orders are routed directly to the MMs or ECNs (on Nas stocks) or directly to the Specialist for listed stocks.

The ATTAIN system is EDAT, and I believe you can get EDAT thru AB Watley, Instinet and several other firms.

It's where you watch the Level II screen, and see who is on the bid and ask, and you can select the players directly and take out their offers of sell to the bids.

Orders are filled within the time constraints of the vehicle that you choose. But usually orders are immediate if at the Bid or Offer, and they are are within 19 seconds if done "at market" to a MM.

I hope that helps. To learn a lot more, check out Nassar's book "How to get Started in Electronic Day Trading." It covers just about all the bases.

Here's an interesting article on the future of the net. Yahoo even got some press out of the deal.
