Actually Global is placing fiber, not coax, primarily undersea. A completely different technology than coax.

I am not saying coax is less reliable. Even though my TCI cable goes out routinely, I will place that blame on TCI, not on the technology itself. My thoughts are more focused on the merits of upgrading copper with DSL, vs, upgrading coax for two way.

If anyone works in the cable industry, I would be interested in their feedback. I have heard that cable is very fragmented, since it was placed by multiple mom and pop cable companies over the years with a variety of standards and placement methods. That would imply that the cable upgrade costs could be huge. I have no first hand knowledge of this, however, so perhaps someone else can shed some light.
