System-On-A-Chip and IP Bring New Challenges to the Industry DALLAS--(BUSINESS WIRE)--May 14, 1999--System-On-A-Chip (SOC) and Intellectual Property (IP) are relatively new topics within the semiconductor manufacturing industry, and they bring new challenges that must be addressed. These were addressed in an SOC symposium presentation and two recent articles on the topic by Ron Leckie, CEO of INFRASTRUCTURE, the leading independent research organization covering the semiconductor manufacturing industry. At the SOC Symposium held on Saturday, May 8th, by CASPA (Chinese American Semiconductor Professional Association), Leckie stated, "It seems that everywhere we turn these days, we hear about Systems-On-a-Chip integrated circuits and how they are going to revolutionize the semiconductor and electronics industries." He added, "However, one of the real problems in identifying the SOC market is that there is no single, clear definition of what comprises an SOC." In an open call for action, he believes this is one of the key issues that needs to be addressed by the SIA (Semiconductor Industry Association), or some other industry body capable of setting a standard definition. Leckie stated, "Until there is a standard definition for SOCs, we will continue to be confused by marketing hype." In the March issue of the INFRASTRUCTURE newsletter, he identified several of the design, process, packaging, and test challenges faced by leading SOC manufacturers including IBM (NYSE:IBM), Lucent (NYSE:LU), and LSI Logic (Nasdaq:LSIL). These challenges all have a huge impact on time-to-market and cost-effectiveness. In the April issue, he discussed the business, legal and technical aspects in dealing with IP. Design reuse is clearly one of the near-term opportunities to offset the ever-widening design productivity gap. On the technology side, integrating external IP is seldom easy. While on the business side, fitting the costs of the buy-versus-build decision into the business model can be a challenge. He discusses these issues relative to both the SOC makers such as IBM (NYSE:IBM); Lucent (NYSE:LU); and LSI Logic (Nasdaq:LSIL); as well as the pure IP companies such as Rambus (Nasdaq:RMBS); Aware (Nasdaq:AWRE); and ARM Holdings (Nasdaq:ARMHY).
