LTS: OT? me<<Libertarians believe Force and Fraud are the only restraints society places on it's members that keep them from exercising their own free will. Yes?>> you:<<From a legal standpoint- i.e., what the state should enforce- I think that is essentially correct. Society, however, has numerous mechanisms of restraining people's anti-social tendencies. Two references, if I may. While the exact mechanism would be difficult for an industrial society to emulate, I think we could take a leaf from the Inuit Indians. My understanding is that if someone became a real "pain" (PIA), the tribe could respond as follows. Everyone, except the PIA, would agree that in the middle of the night they would move. The PIA would be left in the dark, so to speak. When he awoke, he was all alone. In the Arctic, that is a rather chilling prospect!>> Have you not made my implied point? To be left without community in the Artic is a sentence of Death [even for most Inuits...remeber this is not distance stranding, this is no community.] There was no initiation of force, just malign neglect. Having the same effect as a hanging, their is only a semantic difference in it being a hanging. In a complex world their are many interdependencies that, if broken, expose the member to death as sure as Artic Winter or direct force. The State's role, as the institution representing the whole society, is unclear, but it can not be reduced to the police and civil law in a complex society. Custom, we see since James Watts, has had tough time existing, let alone controlling. Ayn is a great person and novelist. I do not find her offering a philosophy for all people. Just for people with her [non-universal] strengths.
