Stocks May Rise in U.S.; 3Com Gains on Speculation It Will Be Taken Over
By Nicola Hobday

London, May 14 (Bloomberg) -- U.S. computer stocks rose in
Europe on speculation 3Com Corp. could be a bid target, lifting
hopes for more takeovers in the industry. Shares in Boeing Co.
also climbed after the company said it will lay off staff in an
effort to cut costs.

3Com, the No. 2 networking-equipment maker, is being touted
as a takeover target, said Business Week's ''Inside Wall Street''
column. The magazine said there's speculation the bidder may be
Swedish wireless phonemaker Ericsson AB and several other
potential bidders are lurking, including Lucent Technologies Inc.
''All these technologies are converging and it's going to be
one great big corporate play,'' said David Donnelly, who manages
a global equity hedge fund at Gordon House Asset Management worth
about $9 million. The sector has ''large growth, exciting
companies and corporate activity -- what else could you want as a
fund manager?''

3Com shares rose 1 to 27 1/2, according to Madoff Securities
International in London. Among other computer related shares,
Intel Corp. rose 1/2 to 60 5/8, Hewlett-Packard Co. gained 3/8 to
87 3/8 and Microsoft Corp. climbed 1/2 to 79 5/8.
