It wasn't. If they had not received the loan from the government, they would have gone broke.

Some would point to the intervention of the government as having been a good thing....jobs, America First, domestic industry, and the usual drivel. The jobs would have come back (with Ford or GM); although I guess there'll be gripes about concentrating the domestic auto industry into 2 companies instead of 3. All I see that was accomplished was that market discipline was undercut. And people who bought US Treasuries paid the price.
