Anthony I'll tell you why........ Because the market is willing to pay outrageous prices. Weather or not you or I believe the prices are warranted based on current fundamentals is a non issue. Any reasonable investment professional realizes the stock prices of 95 to 99% of internet related companies are absurd. That does not however preclude one from making an investment in many of these issues, indeed the vast majority of major stock appreciation and investment gains have come from these types of companies over the past many years. Should we ignore these companies and be satisfied with average index returns?? I guess that depends on ones ability to stomach risk and ones ability to move quickly when the market begins to view some of these companies less favorably. That being said, ipo companies in 1999 that deal in DSL have had similar rates of performance to internet stocks (approx. 150% for the former and 200% for the latter approx.)and I would argue with somewhat less potential risk (although the risk remains high) i.e. recent comment from Steven Tuen, research director of IPO value monitor in New York "The telecom companies have a tangible product and the barriers to entry are a little bit higher than in the internet sector," "Any Joe Schmo can open a web site and start selling books" In addition comments from 5/13/99 (DJ) news... Copper Mountain makes parts used in a high-speed Internet access system known as a digital subscriber line, or DSL. Telecommunications IPOS, especially those related to DSL technology, have trailed only Internet deals this year in terms of gains. Indeed, three companies that are building DSL networks-Covad Communications Group (COVD), NorthPoint Communications Group (NPNT), and Rhythms Netcommunications Group (RTHM) recently completed highly successful IPOS............. Copper Mountain is the first DSL equipment vendor to tap the public markets analysts said. "Covad, Rhythms Netconnections and Northpoint have raised a lot of money in public markets, and now they're looking to spend it," Said Brent Bracelin, an analyst with Pacific Crest Securities in Portland, Ore. Copper Mountain, and companies like it, are the logical beneficiaries of the newfound wealth of these DSL network concerns, Bracelin said. Bracelin explained that there are currently three options for broadband high-speed internet access; cable modems, DSL line and wireless networks. Of the 70 million Internet user in the U.S. only one million are using broadband systems, he said, and most of them are using cable modems. "There are 69 million Internet users who want to go faster. That's the opportunity" for DSL companies, he added. Another factor contributing to the success of DSL offerings is that some investors apparently prefer so-called Internet infrastructure stocks to the highly speculative offerings from companies that merely offer a Web site. So in summary, is it worth 50 60 70 dollars hell no. Are investors willing to pay that for the future potential? Well at least for now they are. And as long as they do we as investors have to weigh the risk potential with the return potential. So I'll buyem then shortem than buyem again and again and again... But don't ignore the clecs and the related companies there is much to be made and has been made long and short. Lastly, I miss the old Anthony, the one who was wealthy enough that he didn't have to squeeze out a couple extra bucks on a pay web site. I've heard your reasons for starting the site and frankly they sound more like excuses than reasons. You were the champion of the little guy, someone that people on SI could really believe was offering advise without self serving reasons. It appears AYN RAND was right no one is selfless, yes you are worth the money, your advise makes people money, but it saddens me. Your free advise was a tease to lead to your ultimate goal of extracting a few extra dollars to your already oversized coffers. Now once again the little guy is left out while those rich enough to afford your site get richer. The little guy needs a champion Anthony, maybe that's to much to ask of anyone, but hey if need to be asked then your probably not the right guy anyway. I hope you will reconsider, become our champion again. EOM
