CTO: Be Patient With Attaining Voice Over IP

IT WILL PROBABLY TAKE five to six years for converged carrier networks to achieve the 100 percent up-time necessary to transport voice over an Internet Protocol (IP) infrastructure, said Jeanette Symons, chief technology officer and co-founder of Ascend Communications, during a keynote address here at NetWorld + Interop.

Voice over IP will be deployed mainly in controlled business environments, instead of carrier networks for the next five or six years, Jeanette Symons, chief technology officer at Ascend told N+I attendees.

Symons rattled off a long list of voice services common to the traditional voice network that must be replicated in IP before carriers deploy a single voice, video, and data network. Those include standards, multivendor interoperability, availability, consistent service, real-time service, bandwidth control, and delay, jitter, and error control.

She said she projected it will take five to six years to get the IP voice standards set and products developed, tested, and deployed in carrier networks. In the meantime, voice over IP will be deployed mainly in controlled business environments, she said.

The single carrier network of the future will be an IP backbone, Symons added. "We [at Ascend] believe that, but we've got to figure out what it takes to get there."

To move from ATM to IP, Ascend is using its Navigator product to make its ATM switches IP-aware. Both Ascend and its soon-to-be parent company Lucent have multi-gigabit and terabit routers, Symons said during a Q&A session after the keynote.

"We're converging from our point of strength," she said.

Asked how Ascend's enterprise customers are impacted by the movement toward convergence, Symons said they will wait for the same developments as Ascend's carrier and service provider customers. Ascend's enterprise customers look more like small carriers because they control their own networks, she said.
