Yogi, take a look at AU, the biggest south african producer. it has a juicy dividend yield, which compensates somewhat for the long wait. a speculative option-type stock i like is RANGY, also an S.A. producer that has lots of marginal mines under it's umbrella and is therefore very sensitive to price movements in gold.

I have had some success buying ASA on the dips, and then writing calls on the pops

I do believe this is the best strategy for gold stocks as it allows you to capture time premium. I'm skeptical of a big move up in gold.

In fact, I've been thinking of doing the same with barrick
