al,
i would buy them through a broker--i don't do mutual funds---i usually but them out as far as possible--you get more bang for your buck--for example--you can buy some fhlmc for approx.$125 that mature in 2028 at $1000--thats approx.. a 7.25% yield---if rates go down you can sell them for a nice profit--or worse case hold to maturity
