A CD-ROM drive cannot archive data, but a CD-R/RW drive can.

If you want a good CD-ROM drive, try the Kenwood TrueX 52X with Zen multi-beam technology. Currently the fastest CD-ROM drive on the market. A little pricey at $120, but I think it's worth it.

If you want a good CD-R/RW, try the HP i8210 (internal IDE version) for about $400.
