I just saw the film.

>Of course, the fellow from Benin was very impressive…<

Indeed. Very.

>…and Hopkins and McConnaughey did very well.<

Hopkins is really quite a wonder. He did very nicely as Adams. His scenes both with the African at his home and before the Supreme Court were compelling.

>But there was a curious lack in it, I am not sure why, so that it seemed that it should have left more of an impression than it did...<

Well now this is quite extraordinary! I thought exactly the same thing. The acting was exceptional, the story very moving and the movie pretty enough, but I found the whole thing too small. Moreover, there were a few false but brief moments that to me seemed to threaten the film's gravity. The film was a bit like Morgan Freeman's role. Freeman is a great actor, but his role as Joadson did not allow his greatness to flourish. It was for the most part nonessential even though nicely executed. But Amistad is a very great film nevertheless (LOL).
