I believe your discussion is focusing too much on the media and not the medium.

Unfortunately I can't get too specific, but let me say this. Tomorrows multiservice nets will need to be able to discern traffic types and treat them differently throughout the network. Perhaps more importantly these devices will need to work together on re-routing should elements fail, or get congested. Today there is no standard method to do this and so you can either use rudimentary means or go with a single vendor and get a competitively superior solution. If you chose the former you can bet you'll be competing against the later. The SP with the best service (and great marketing of course) will win.

HOpe that was succinct enough. Don't get caught up in the "fiber" discussion...look at network elements and how the behave and interact with other elements in the network..
