As a former user (and victim) of Bell Labs I am always astounded by the belief that they walk on water. If they did they would not have had to acquire Ascend to fill in for the failed ATM switches of the past, and they would would not have conceived of other ill fated concepts such as "True Voice" a number of years ago. Yes, they have talented people, but they have yet to provide they can produce products in a timely fashion for the competitive market place.

P. S. While the Labs was not looking, NT just stole all of the local class 5 switch business from Lucent.

"CSCO has numerous holes, no optical networking..." I largely agree with your post, which runs so contrary to most of the thinking on this thread. However, you fail to mention that CSCO is a master of acquisition and incorporating the acquired companies, along with their leading edge technology, into the fold. Also, routers have quite complex technology that has been improved considerably in the past years, and CSCO has consistently been able to thrive in this environment by producing very good products with terrific customer relations.

Dude:

I don't mind the marketing fluff you are blowing but lets get real here. ASND has had some great products and success, however, the truth is that CSCO did pass ASND this quarter in 2 key areas. ASND has nothing to say about the end-to-end story.

CSCO continues to kick ass and accelerate. Look at the quarterly results which were unusually strong across all product lines!!

Bell Labs is in a class by themselves but they are outdated and move like molassis compared to the valley's high tech talent.
