CABLE MODEM CUSTOMER COUNT TOPS 800,0000 Together @Home and Road Runner Now Installing 15,000 Subscribers per Week, Shaw Passes 100,000 Mark Propelled by the first-quarter subscriber gains of @Home Network and Road Runner, North American MSOs pushed past the 800,000 mark for cable modem customers in April. Based on curr ent cable modem installation volume, CABLE DATACOM NEWS publisher Kinetic Strategies Inc. projects North American MSOs will reach the 1 million-subscriber milestone in July. <Picture>According to its first-quarter report, @Home served more than 460,000 cable modem subscribers as of March 31, up from 331,000 at the end of 1998, with a total of 15 million affiliate homes marketed for the service. @Home added approximately 129,000 customers in the first quarter, an average installation rate of nearly 10,000 per week . Shaw Communications has become the first @Home affiliate to pass the 100,000-subscriber threshold. It is an amazing achievement for Shaw, considering the MSO only counts 1.5 million basic cable customers. The two other MSOs with more than 100,000 cable modem customers, Time Warner Cable and MediaOne, are continuing to grow the ir Internet businesses at a breakneck pace. Thanks to their efforts, Road Runner counted more than 250,000 customers on March 31 with 8 million homes marketed. Together, @Home and Road Runner installed an average of 15,400 customers per week in the first quarter, equal to 2,200 per day. In total, Kinetic Strategies estimates North American MSOs finished the first quarter with 750,000 cable modem customers, up from 550,000 at the end of 1998. By April 30 they had boosted that total to 815,000 customers with 26 million homes marketed, some 25 percent of all cable homes passed. >>>>>>>> It seems there is a hunger for broadband developing:) BTW, didn't ATHM and MSFT just announce partnership yesterday?
