While I am not gloating about some of the grief I took over on the Iridium thread when I predicted the exact events now unfolding, this poster from Yahoo makes some points that I beleive are valid, but I was bashed for saying it here. I think Iridium has some fatal flaws and contrary to what some posted here, I don know what I am talking about and my research has been validated by those in the field who should know. Some of whom even warned Iridium of these critical point (bottom line: don't rain on somebody's parade when Wall Street agrees to fund it with other peoples money). I think that those flaws will become more apparent later this year. The faster they restructure the better. If preformance of the system were to begin degrading or more sats were to fail (above the predicted rate), the restucture could be hopeless. If I am right, everybody is going to lose here, not just the equity folks. The other point is that it isn't just the retail investor holding the bag here (IRID is around 15 percent of the entire equity investment). Lots of big corps and strategic investors will get wiped out. These are investors who must distribute, sell and market this service, but with their ownership impaired or wiped out. These investors were often vital in negotiating gateways and other issues with foregin goverments. This thing is so ugly. Harping on the coming problems (already materializing) is a little premature. I will not speak about it anymore except to say that I may go short the new equity of the restructured Iridium. I think Globalstar stock will head back down. Not because it should, but this story will keep evolving. Pretty soon news articles and analysts reports will focus on how the restructured Iridium will compete and attempt to make its debtholder whole before the array turns into a floating sea of space junk. New Motorola O & M contract, new vendor financing, cut handset prices and minute rates and agressive marketing. This would likely happen at the same time Globalstar is preparing for commercial launch. Fortunately, I think the Iridium systems performance will degrade and as with everything that has happened with Iridium, that fact won't be kept a secret by the media. I still hold hope that I can buy Globalstar at post Zenit levels. I may be wrong and so far, I have missed a great trade.
