Yahoo brings free voice mail to Canadian Web site
TORONTO, May 20 (Reuters) - Internet portal provider Yahoo
Inc. <YHOO.O> launched new Canadian features on Thursday,
including the first free service allowing cybersurfers to chat
real-time around the world via voice messages.
Yahoo, based in Palo Alto, California, now lets Canadian
residents exchange actual sound bites over its Web site free of
charge, if both sides have microphones attached to their
computers, said President and Chief Operating Officer Jeff
Mallett.
The feature, a Yahoo exclusive, works like a two-way radio
where one person speaks at a time.
Mallett said he recently held a conversation with a friend
near Sydney, Australia, for 45 minutes.
Yahoo also unveiled a technology that allows users to
personalize information pages. This will allow Canadian
cybernauts to assemble their favorite information on a page
which is then updated with the latest content. Also, the
service now includes the ability to create financial portfolios
with slightly delayed quotes from Canadian stock exchanges.
Canada's Internet market is up to 12 million people, with
projected advertising revenue of about $40 million this year
compared with estimates of $4 billion for the United States,
Mallett said.
Mallett added he's now looking ahead to expanding in South
America, and deploying similar, localized services for each
nation.
Yahoo, recently surpassed by Lycos Inc. <LCOS.O> as the
most popular hub on the Internet in the United States, will top
Lycos's market share once it closes a $4.6 billion deal with
online community Geocities on May 28, Mallett said.
On Thursday Yahoo stock fell $2.25 to $156 on Nasdaq.
