"...Rob Kugel, an analyst with First Albany Corp., believes it is logical for business intelligence to eventually team up with knowledge management. But he believes it will be at least 18 to 24 months before customers will want to go to one vendor for the combined technology.

Mr. Kugel's view is that when considering new product categories, corporate customers typically opt for the best available technologies even if it means mixing and matching software from different companies. He believes that corporate customers only start looking for a single vendor to supply their software needs after product categories have matured to the point where many companies are offering roughly similar offerings.

From that point of view, Hummingbird's execution of integrating PC Docs's technology will be key in the next year or two; other document-management and business-intelligence companies will probably respond with alliances of their own..."
