Douglas,

The current bottleneck is the rate at which disk drives can write data. A couple of years ago - we did some calculations about the rate at which disks and storage arrays can take up the data. At the Shareholder's Meeting, Cal Nelson said that this was still the limiting factor. On the server side, adapters are getting fast enough to support 2.125 Gbaud, but throughput at level of the disk controller is limiting. I the fact that FC switches are cascaded at this time also speaks to the fact that maximum SAN bandwidth is not required, especially for high traffic, small message applications like transaction processing.

Patterson and Hennessy (Computer Organization and Design) - discuss some of these I/O scenarios as well as the likelihood that magnetic storage will be replaced by something else (it won't be).
