In reference to my no barriers to entry business, I'll compare internet portals to another media business, the television business.

1) At the beginning of the TV business there were only so many airwaves available to broadcast over. The government strictly regulated the number of players involved. There is absolutely no limitation to the number of internet players.

2) Infrastructure. Expensive equipment, expensive facilities, broadcasting facilities across the country, the cost of decent original programming, a news organization. This all costs tons of money and there are limited resources for much of it.

Bottom line, all it takes is a few million dollars to enter the portal business, not the several hundred of millions that it takes to enter the television business, but still they enter. Fox, UPN, WB. Watch the competition flood this market if somebody can prove the ability to make enough money in it. So far that has not happened.
