Massimo D'Alema is a Communist. His slim majority is made up of fraction parties of extreme left, left and center left. If it was upto them, they would have closed all the NATO bases in the country. They represent a very small no. of voters.

In 1968, there was a CIA plan that very few know abou it. The code name was "Gldiator." In case of a Soviet invasion, two prongs would have moved toward Italy, one from Slovenia, and the other from the Austria through the Brenner Pass. North of Italy, and the Pò valley was not defenedable.
The NATO was to abandon the North. Before pulling out behind Apennines, 200,000 Italian Communist that were ready to colaborate with the Soviets and form a Government were to be arested, 15,000 eleminated and the rest moved to the South and locked-up. A pity the Soviets didn't attack! D'Alema would have been one of the 15,000!! GG
