Mike,

>>He is certainly the best of this lot.<<

Maybe. But all closers look good when they have dueling speedsters and other mediocre horses coming back to them. The visual impressiveness of the move was mostly an optical illusion. The first 1/2 mile was absolutely blistering and the next quarter was moderate. Everything from there home I could have closed ground into. They were literally crawling. The final time was a bad one. 2 of the 4 other major contenders were eliminated by the development of the race and the fillie broke down. 2 of the major contenders in the Derby (Baffert's colts) weren't even entered despite having excuses for their performances that day relative to the winner. So I am not convinced he is the best colt yet. I am only convinced he is as good as some of the other major horses in the crop and won both times on better trips.
He did however beat Menifee fair and square this time as opposed to last. I have Belmont clubhouse tickets on order from 3 weeks ago. I'm looking forward to it. I will have a difficult time saying Seattle Slew and Charismatic in the same breath, but I suspect that this is going to be a very weak Belmont field so he has a very big shot.

Vicar won't go.

It doesn't make economic sense for Lukas to send Cat Thief. It might cost him the $5 million bonus.

The fillies won't/can't go. Baffert's 2 colts mostly likely not.

That leaves Menifee and a late developer. I see no other hot prospects.

Wayne

Mike - I've heard Baffert express some doubt about Silver going 1 1/4, especially vs. Ex. Meeting. Also heard him say that General Challenge was the best he's ever had - all this prior to the Derby. Observing his entries, non-entries, scratches, and comments, the guy seems more confused than I've seen in the past few years. I think he's been pressing. Ralph
