Bill,

<< This has to be one of the wider circulated myths surrounding cable. Here's the real story: The entire net is based on shared bandwidth. The only question is at what level do bottlenecks arise. Does anyone honestly believe that the average local telco switching office has sufficient bandwidth on premises to handle 1000 simultaneous DSL users? >>

Your absolutely right, of course, the net is a shared medium. The issues becomes more acute on the local loop, however, since this is the bottleneck. Nonetheless, I am glad to hear your cable service is working well for you. I am hearing that from a number of sources, which is encouraging.

Your second point is also correct. The Telcos aggregate the DSL traffic into something less than a 1:1 ratio onto their backbone. The precise amount is not published. I suspect the cable companies do this as well. It keeps the costs down, and with the bursty nature of net traffic, should work satisfactorily most of the time.

I believe both DSL and Cable will be major last mile solutions, so I am not advocating one over the other.

Regards,
