Kevin Cook

[FELLS POINT] – It’s a sad day for the city of Baltimore. The television drama, Homicide, Life On The Streets has been canceled by NBC.

This is the news everyone who worked on the show and fans around the country were afraid of. After 7 seasons, the curtain is closing on Homicide, Life on the Streets.

The Fells Point set is quiet this weekend since they’ve finished shooting this season’s episodes. But for the past seven years, the cast and crew were ready to start production again in the fall. This year the set will be permanently silent.
“This is a very emotional thing with people who are fans of Homicide,” said Yaphet Koto, the actor who plays Lieutenant Al Giordello. “When you see shows like the Jenny Jones show and Jerry Springer shows remaining on the air, and homicide was just basically a family show which taught so many values and morality its an indication as to where America is going.”
Kotto says he realizes that while the show wins awards, it doesn’t draw ratings.
The final episode will air may twenty-first. The series will remain in re-runs until a replacement is made next fall, and the online drama will continue for some time.
Losing the production will be a big financial loss for the city. The show was bringing in more than 30-million dollars every year, and most of the workers were local. But the set wasn’t just of interest to charm city residents. Tourists came from all over the country to visit fells point and the homicide set.
As for the cast, they need to find new jobs.
“I think the best thing for one to do now is step back, and rest,” says Kotto, “and not run for mayor of Baltimore as some people are trying to make me do.”
Kotto says he’s really considering a run for mayor, because so many people have approached him about it. He would have one major obstacle though. He doesn’t live in the city, he lives in Baltimore county.
