Jenne - I have become very cynical about market news. I watch and listen every day and am amazed at how the perceived crisis end so quickly. On any given Thursday Maria, Mark, David and Joe (CNBC) will be casting doom and gloom for one reason or another and by the next Tuesday the situation is not as bas as originally thought, or is actually better when looked at from a different angle.

I know the market can dive for legitimate reasons, but I believe that the short term ups and downs are preconceived to keep the market volatile and the movers and shakers in the money.

I lived through the double-digit inflation of the Jimmy Carter years and the interest rates now are nothing compared to then. When Clinton took office the first term he had to do something quick to show progress, so he saw to it that a considerable amount of national debt was refinanced through short-term, low-interest bonds. After doing so he was able to say that he reduced the deficit. The catch was (and still is) that interest rates had to stay down or all his gains are down the tubes. Since then the White House and the Fed have been doing their best to keep rates down and have succeeded so far.

I am going to start keeping a log of the news (positive, neutral, negative) on a daily basis, the reasons for the news, and the time element between the first mention and the turnaround. If successful it should be interesting.
