DEBRA VOGT: Having been around the "Street" awhile I've come to believe that Analysts, like all professions, tend to resemble a bell-curve; a few terrible, a lot are OK, a few quite outstanding. More frequently than you might want to imagine conversations go something like this: "So what do you think about XYZ?" "Gee, I'm not sure, what do YOU think about XYZ?" "Well" says the first, scratching his noggin "management is pretty good, the stock's acting OK and I hear they're gonna meet their numbers and I hear from Bob over at ABC Fund that they're accumulating. Guess I'll pick up a coupla hundred thousand shares." "Sounds good" says the second, we"ve got a pretty good position, I guess it'll be OK to add some more here. You go first, it was your idea, I don't wanna step on your toes." And yeah, there are fund managers, probably not many, who're watching JENNA and her selections. Why? 'Cause she's good and performing a hell of a lot better than many. (Lee)

Debra, that was a refreshing and enlightening post.

There is a thread on SI right now that has been plugging NXTL and COMS as "potential takeover targets" and has been spamming relevant threads to this effect, encouraging people to buy and hold the stock. However.....

I get most of my info and form my opinions about those types of stocks from several different sources, which have proven very reliable so far.

The very same day that David Faber on CNBC was being credited with "breaking the story" that WCOM would not "take over" NXTL, this conclusion could have been reached by almost anybody who, early that morning, had simply read the business section of my local metropolitan newspaper, and possibly other newspapers.

Another source of my investment information is a large number of "information technology" trade journals, supplied by my spouse. I concluded long ago that not only is COMS not in the market to be taken over and has its own business plan for the future, and has actually stated publicly that the company is not planning on a takeover, but furthermore, isn't even an attractive takeover target, due to poor competitiveness in some of its products and the fact that its competitors are grabbing more market share all the time. That is strictly MY opinion, based on what "I" have read on my own. I might be wrong, but until proven wrong, this is not where my stock investment dollars are going.

The stock-market spam and misinformation available on the Internet is truly amazing. This thread, run by Jenna, is one of the few that doesn't seem to fall prey to that sort of thing, and that's why I personally enjoy this thread. Hopefully, I can contribute something worthwhile to the thread every now and then. In the end, everyone has to so some research on their own.

Again, Debra, thanks for posting that interesting story. Looks like the analysts are sorta falling down on the "research" job, themselves.
