>>Could one use NT Explorer to copy the WINNT directory to a
WINNT2 directory on the same partition ..then modify the boot.ini?
The result being two operating systems on the same drive..eliminating
drive letter problems?

I have succeeded in doing that, but I have more often
failed. I don't know the reasons for success or failure,
unfortunately.

BUT you can't copy an active NT. You have to boot another
one, then copy. That means you will have three. I have
experimented a little with this and have had initial success
but not pursued it further. I have also failed at it.
I have not pursued that either.

My method is to boot to my backup NT and copy the
primary NT for the purpose of restoration in an
emergency. This is only the NT directory itself, at most
(not the partition).

Although I have copied the whole shebang
from time to time, usually what I copy is just the registry.
I have never had to restore more than just the registry.

Again I note, for anyone not following this sub-thread
of conversation, that we are ONLY talking about OS and
possibly application restores here (KOT). We are NOT
talking about data backup, which is a different issue.
Sorry if this is redundant, but I am only reading my
direct posts nowadays, so I don't know what's being posted
around me on the thread.

WINNT2 would show up as a boot option on reboot And the drive lettering would remain the same. You've solved these two issues. But would apps that need directory referals be content with the /winnt/ vs /winnt2 differentiation?

This sounds like a case which would need to be setup from scratch rather than cloning.
