Taiwan Semi Starts Offering 0.18 Micron Chipmaking Technology

San Jose, California, May 17 (Bloomberg) -- Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. said it has starting using 0.18 micron technology to make chips for some of its customers that are 30 percent faster and use a third less power.

TSMC, a so-called foundry that manufactures computer chips for companies that design and sell them, said six chipmakers are sampling products on the new line. TSMC expects to produce 34,000 wafers on the 0.18 micron line this year, increasing next year to 600,000, or 25 percent of its total output.

The advance catapults TSMC to the forefront of chipmaking technologies. Foundries have lagged bigger chipmakers because of the $1.5 billion investment required for new plants. Now, TSMC is on par with No. 1 chipmaker Intel Corp., which has started using 0.18 technology, though it hasn't introduced the chips yet.

''We're now up there with the leaders of the industry,'' said TSMC's U.S. president, Magnus Ryde. ''Now you can compete against the biggest and meanest companies at a very low cost of entry.''
