Dean, office manager at Anaheim, Calif.-based CST Environmental, Inc., a leading asbestos abatement firm, accomplished this task online, without using the telephone -- even for scheduling the pickup. At the SmartShip.com Web site (http://www.smartship.com), users can compare shipping prices and services, select a courier, and print an airbill using their PC -- in a matter of seconds. Membership and use of the website is free. The user only pays for the cost of the package shipment. Between any two zip codes, SmartShip.com compares overnight package delivery companies by displaying rate and service information for Airborne Express, FedEx, UPS, the U.S. Postal Service, as well as other regional and national couriers. Package tracking for these couriers is also simplified via a consistent display of tracking results. SmartShip.com started deploying online shipping with a regional courier, Golden State Overnight, prior to a full national rollout scheduled for the coming weeks. When the shipper chooses an "enabled" service such as Golden State Overnight, the rest of the package shipping process becomes remarkably simple -- users print out a plain-paper label on a laser or inkjet printer, and either generate an automatic pickup request with confirmation, or obtain directions to and deadlines for the nearest drop off location. The courier shipping cost is paid online using a corporate or personal credit card. Soon, shippers will have the option of entering established courier account numbers. Other SmartShip features include an "intelligent" address book, sender-recipient email notification services for pickup and delivery status, and a history of all shipping transactions. Package tracking is done through a simple and consistent interface "It is all about simplicity," said Mark Hawkins, VP Strategic Marketing of Virtran, Inc., the developer of SmartShip.com. "Shipping is a chore that takes anywhere from five to fifteen minutes per package. If we can make life simpler by reducing that time to 60 seconds or less, we have done our job. We don't touch the packages. We simply present options to our users, and facilitate their transaction of choice -- that is what makes us a virtual courier." "The Web allows us to play the role of an 'Infomediary' that provides an equal playing field for both the courier and the shipper. We are an unbiased and independent consumer advocate, and don't play favorites with the couriers. We value service, price and on-time performance but we let our customers make the choice." Virtran, Inc., headquartered in Irvine, is a developer of industry-specific search engines and transaction engines. CONTACT: Virtran, Inc. Mark Hawkins, 949/453-9669 Kimberly Newman, 949/453-9669
