At least they won't be getting any DELL executives!!! Fez __________________________ News article received, Saturday, May 15, 1999 7:04:34 AM EST Oracle's Lane On Short List For CEO Spot At Compaq May. 14, 1999 (Computer Reseller News - CMP via COMTEX) -- Redwood Shores, Calif. - Compaq Computer Corp. may be moving closer to landing a new chief executive following the recent ouster of Eckhard Pfeiffer. Ray Lane, president of Oracle Corp., is seriously considering filling Pfeiffer's shoes, said sources close to Oracle. Two years ago, Lane was courted for the top spot at Novell Inc., but he chose to stay on at Oracle and received a hefty bonus from the Redwood Shores-based company for his loyalty, the sources said. Oracle would not comment on the reports. Compaq now also has scouts out to replace John Rando, senior vice president and group manager of Compaq Services, who resigned last week for personal reasons. Rando's departure follows that of Michael Heil, senior vice president of worldwide sales, marketing and service and support, who resigned last month. Rando joined Compaq when the company merged last year with Digital Equipment Corp., where he was senior vice president of Maynard, Mass.-based Digital's Service Division. During his tenure with Compaq, the company's service business grew by 10 percent, rounding out 1998 with revenue of $6.45 billion, said Rando in a recent interview with CRN. Rando was largely responsible for introducing a new service model in which partners were rewarded based on customer satisfaction ratings for warranty work. "From a services perspective, the Compaq-Digital merger has been very much on track under [Rando's] watch," said Mark Romanowski, vice president of services at Jade Systems Corp., Cold Spring, N.Y., who sits on Compaq Services' advisory council.
