Did I miss something here? All the previous news being touted had GBLX buying USWest. Now West pays GBLX to merge 50-50??? Man, someone had this story wrong.

I still think this is a mistake; either a desperation move or would-be empire builders getting ahead of themselves. the FRO deal and now this deal confirm to me that Winnick and Bob A. want major league bulk but above all else don't want to lose personal control, and they're willing to accept not-best-in-class partners in order to keep it that way.

FRO isn't a bad company but GBLX/QWST would've made much more sense for the long haul, and USW is certainly the wimpiest of the RBOCs. GBLX/QWST/BLS would've kicked major butt. Will GBLX/FRO/USW kick major butt? It's harder to say yes.
