LSI Logic Announces Availability of Single Chip Solution for Next Generation Set-Top Boxes

MILPITAS, Calif., May 17 /PRNewswire/ -- Extending its industry lead in end-to-end set-top box (STB) solutions, LSI Logic Corporation (NYSE: LSI) today introduced the SC2000 Source Decoder, a new class of device that will power next-generation, convergence-ready STB entertainment appliances. The fully integrated single-chip solution, a component of the Integra(R) Set-top Development Platform, will enable sophisticated multimedia capabilities on the set-top by supporting a full spectrum of video & audio utilizing multiple broadcast standards.

"The SC2000 is our solution today for the set-top box requirements of tomorrow," said Elie Antoun, executive vice president, Consumer Products Division, LSI Logic. "The STB market is becoming increasingly competitive with our customers demanding a common source solution that leverages their finite development resources while simultaneously addressing the multiple needs of their end customers. The SC2000, with its powerful set of features and attributes, comfortably meets the expectations of our customers to develop next-generation convergence products for the home entertainment market," added Antoun. This successful integration now delivers to LSI Logic's high-volume OEM customers a highly cost-optimized product that enables fast time-to-market.

Demonstrating LSI Logic's superior system-on-chip methodology, the SC2000 integrates the functions of the DVB transport and MPEG-2 A/V decoding, a 2-D graphic engine, a multi-standard video encoder, audio DACs and a TinyRISC(R) CPU into a single chip solution. LSI Logic is the first company to incorporate an audio DAC into an STB chipset. Powered by a TinyRISC MIPS(R) CPU, the SC2000 sets the industry standard for performance, flexibility, and functionality. This new product extends today's set-top box specifications to meet the requirements of more sophisticated, higher-performing platforms of the future.

"Chip suppliers are increasingly being pushed to supply products with even higher levels of integration at a cost which makes them competitive within the industry," said Jay Srivatsa, senior industry analyst at Dataquest. "The high level of integration combined with the increased performance and flexibility will enable OEM manufacturers' to provide future products that can meet the demands of the digital convergence market."

Greater Performance

By combining LSI Logic's market-proven technologies and cores in an optimized architecture, SC2000's rich feature set delivers definitive performance that meets next generation set-top box requirements. A dual memory architecture provides two significant benefits for system performance. The dedicated A/V memory bus provides the high bandwidth required for MPEG-2 decoding without compromising the CPU and graphics subsystem performance. In addition, the unification of the CPU and OSG (On-Screen Graphics) memories delivers high-performance graphics processing. The OSG subsystem provides a 5-plane display architecture and a high-performance 2D-Block Move engine. Combining this technology with the TinyRISC MIPS CPU is essential for delivering Electronic Programming Guides (EPG), information services, entertainment and other advanced applications expected in next generation set-top products.

Leading Class CPU

The SC2000 features a high performance 108-MHz, 32-bit, TinyRISC MIPS microprocessor making the SC2000 the fastest available MIPS-based STB solution on the market. The chip offers industry standard software compatibility to ensure smooth migration from previous generations of LSI Logic set-top box solutions and software investment protection for future MIPS-based STB solutions developed by LSI Logic.

The SC2000 offers significant headroom for applications and system services to expand after deployment and is fully supported by a wide choice of professional software tools from recognized industry leaders. The solution supports compact MIPS16 instruction set that can offer up to 40 percent reduction in code size, while retaining full compatibility with existing 32-bit binary code.

Integra Set-Top Development Platform -- SDP2000

With the SDP2000 development platform, LSI Logic provides a complete development environment, combining the company's powerful hardware and software components into a comprehensive platform that accelerates the development of customized STB offerings. The SC2000 interfaces seamlessly with LSI Logic's DTV Channel products for Digital Terrestrial, Cable and Satellite offerings. For example, the SC2000 combined with LSI Logic's L64733/34 Tuner-Receiver chip set offers a complete three-chip satellite set-top box solution. The SDP2000 platform permits designers to implement complete STB solutions, ranging from graphics-rich receiver boxes to advanced entertainment systems supporting web browsing, video gaming and high-speed Internet access.

Price and Availability

SC2000 samples are available now and volume shipments will start in Q3 1999 with a target price of less than $20 in volume.
