(BSNS WIRE) Siemens Joins Fiber Alliance to Standardize Storage Area Net
Siemens Joins Fiber Alliance to Standardize Storage Area Networks; Major IT
company partnership benefits from Siemens long term industry experience

Business Editors

SAN JOSE, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--May 17, 1999--Siemens AG has
joined the "Fiber Alliance", a collaborative venture between leading
IT companies. A primary goal is the standardization of Storage Area
Networks (SANs). As part of the Alliance, Siemens will contribute its
extensive experience in the field of customer-specific total solutions
in a heterogeneous IT environment. Siemens is placing an emphasis on
safeguarding its customers' investments by developing standards which
will be recognized by all IT providers.
The rationale to form the Fiber Alliance came from the EMC
Corporation, the world's leading vendor of enterprise storage systems,
software and services. Established in February 1999, the goal of the
Alliance is to develop and implement universally recognized methods to
simplify the management of heterogeneous fiber channel based networks
of storage systems and servers, called Storage Area Networks.
"The rising presence of Storage Area Networks necessitates
standards by which SANs are developed and implemented," said Richard
McCormack director of product marketing for Siemens Computer Systems.
"The Fiber Alliance has taken the initiative to create those standards
which will enable increased functionality and ease of integration -
reducing costs and implementation time."
The Alliance plans to introduce its own technical specification
to customers and the public as early as this spring (1999) while also
submitting them to independent standards bodies for acceptance as a
worldwide industrial standard. This unique initiative will allow
Alliance members simplified integration and expanded functionality for
fiber channel networks, and easier network management, reduced costs
and quicker market acceptance of SANs.
SANs provide a flexible and efficient way of consolidating and
managing the ever-increasing quantities of enterprise data. The
growing SAN segment makes it necessary to use fiber channel technology
as the basic infrastructure for combining the heterogeneous components
of a storage network, such as host bus adapters, hubs, switches,
routers, servers and storage systems. Today there is no universally
recognized standard for the supervision and management of these
elements in a heterogeneous SAN. Using a standardized management
interface will provide customers with detailed information on their
enterprise-wide SAN and the components grouped within it.
In a recent statement (12/4/98), the Meta Group supported the
Alliance's ability, in comparison with other associations, to create a
set of industry-accepted SAN standards, by commenting that when users
need to install SAN installations as quickly as possible they should
focus on real standards, "such as EMC's Fiber Alliance".
In addition to Siemens and EMC, the following companies also
belong to the Alliance: Anchor Communications, Inc., Emulex
Corporation, Gadzoox Networks, G2 Networks Inc., Hewlett-Packard, JNI,
McData Corporation, QLogic Corporation, Veritas Software Corporation
and Vixel Corporation.
