The underwater moose hunting adventure was not by choice!!! I assure you!!! And the only meat brought home from that adventure was an unopened can of Spam. Bear in mind of course, that Alaskans are the second largest per capital consumers of Spam in the nation! We are slightly behind Hawaii in that category. In fact, in Ketchikan there was a Wearable Arts Fashion Show and a guy showed up as a Spamurai Warrior dressed entirely in Spam cans... Those cans didn't come directly from the factory... I can assure you. We eat SPAM in Alaska... lots of Spam!!! In my case, it's the one sure way to bring home the meat from a hunting trip! Just leave with too much Spam in your pack (I must admit, in my case too much Spam is any Spam at all... I never was one to follow regional trends). The underwater moose hunting trip was very simple. A friend and I were floating the Swanson River in a Canoe with all of our equipment including guns and packs. We slipped past a sweeper which caught me (read I mindlessly grabbed it to push it out of the way) and the water pushed the canoe over. We were over our heads in water. The guns sunk immediately. The packs opened and all of our gear and food were bobbing down the river! Stump (yes... the same Stump from the fishing cabin) charged down the river after the food and gear. I stayed and rescued the boat and the guns (some kind of fun... skin diving in September in Bush Alaska!!!) and all was retrieved except two candy bars and an apple! We set up tent and tried to warm ourselves. Some other hunters came along and offered me some brandy to warm up. I had just enough sense to know that was bad judgement and declined. We saw some nice moose on that trip but none were in proper position to shoot. Actually I'm glad. I'm not sure that we could have packed that much meat into a canoe. I believe we were overestimating the cargo limits of the vessel! Also, at this point in my life, I feel as if dropping a large animal in nature using high velocity lead poisoning may have some bad karma associated with the act. At the same time, I eat beef which my vegetarian daughter contends comes from those inhumane feedlots she calls "cowshwitz"... So... I can't get too righteous about hunting for moose! I suppose if somebody is going to eat the meat and not engage in wanton waste... nature has allowed for such activities for as long as creatures have been roaming the seas and land. So... there you have it. Underwater moose hunting! The common demoninator between stories is the canoe!!! In both stories, I was out of it!!!

Paul... Now about Abacan...
