aggressive regional U.S. phone company in rolling out high-speed
data services to take on unprecedented competition in its local
phone markets.

''Sol's emphasis on driving that company deeper and deeper
into data has been what's separated U S West from its peers,''
Wright said. ''That has to be a positive for Global Crossing.''

The Global Crossing agreement values U S West at about
$2,250 for each local phone line. That compares with an average
of $3,700 AT&T is paying for each cable-TV customer in its
purchases of Tele-Communications Inc. and MediaOne Group Inc. to
compete in the $110 billion-a-year local phone market.


Global Crossing is getting the company cheap,'' Wright said.
''They're not stealing it, but they're getting some powerful
assets for a very good price.''...
