Business Wire - May 17, 1999 09:31
HOUSTON--(BUSINESS WIRE)--May 17, 1999--

New High-Value Armada 1750 Also Debuts at $1,999(1)

Compaq Computer Corporation (NYSE:CPQ) today added a double shot of value to its Armada notebook PC families -- an Armada 1500c model with the faster new Intel(R) Celeron(TM) processor 366MHz, and a new Armada 1750 Series model with a 12.1-inch color TFT screen. Both products are available immediately in North America.

For five months in a row, models in the Armada 1700 Series have made the "Windows Magazine" "WinList" of best values in corporate notebook personal computers. The Armada 1500c not only made its way to the May 1999 and June "WinList," but was named "Best Buy" in its first appearance on the list. In addition, the "Computer Reseller News" Test Center just gave its Editors' Choice award to Compaq for the Armada 1750, stating that it combined the best features, convenience and reseller profitability.

"These new Armada models provide even greater value for our professional mobile customers, leading the industry in high performance features at extremely competitive prices," said Ed Ellett, Vice President of Marketing for PC Products, North America.

Robert Jecmen, Vice President and General Manager, Mobile Handheld Products Group, Intel Corporation, added, "Compaq is committed to providing the latest technology to their mobile customers in every segment of the commercial market. Giving the Armada 1500c the fastest Intel Celeron processor power shows that Compaq is clear-cut in its goal of providing value and performance."

The new Armada 1500c model is based on the new Intel Celeron processor 366MHz, and also includes a 4-Gigabyte(2) (GB) SMART hard drive, 32-megabytes (MB) of memory, a 12.1-inch CTFT screen, a 24X CD-ROM(3) drive, a 56K V.90(4) modem, and either Windows 95 or Windows NT 4.0 pre-installed. The Windows 95 model is available for $1,799, while the Windows NT model is available for $1,899.

The new Armada 1750 model includes an Intel Mobile Pentium II microprocessor at 333MHz, a 4GB SMART hard drive, 64MB of memory, a 12.1-inch CTFT screen, a 24X CD-ROM drive, a 56K V.90 modem, and either Windows 95 or Windows NT 4.0 pre-installed. The Windows 95 model is available for $1,999 and the Windows NT model is available for $2,099. For more information on these products, please see compaq.com.

Price Cuts and Promotions

In addition to today's new product announcements, Compaq announced several price cuts on existing models. The Armada 1500c with the 266MHz Intel Celeron processor and a color STN (super-twist nematic) display was reduced to $1,399 for the Windows 95 model, and the Armada 1500c with the 300MHz Intel Celeron processor and a color TFT display was reduced to $1,599 for the Windows 95 model and $1,699 for the Windows NT model.

The company also reiterated a promotion on its lightweight Armada 3500 Series -- until May 31, 1999, customers purchasing the 266MHz or 300MHz Armada 3500 Series models can receive a free CD-ROM based Mobile Expansion Unit (MEU), a $199 value, while supplies last. The optional MEU adds a fixed 24X Max CD-ROM or DVD, and the flexibility of a MultiBay for support for an optional second hard drive, diskette drive (standard with notebook), optional SuperDisk LS-120 or an optional Iomega ZIP Drive, as well as an integrated AC Adapter.
