One gets the impression from this article that Intel was shipping vanilla desktop PCs on the QT when in fact there was a huge marketing campaign with incentives and rebates on both the PC and server products. Also a fair amount of press last year when Intel shut down the Hillsboro plant that made the vanilla boxes. Mr. McGee should read the SI Intel thread, he'd get a lot better inside information.

The Register has a surprising amount of both good and bad information. They seem to have a good pipeline into the old DEC people, especially those in the semiconductor end (many of whom came from the UK). Their info on CPQ plans seems a lot less consistent.
