NTL EXPANDS INTO FRANCE

NTL is to acquire the 1G networks owned by France Telecom and operated by France Telecom Cable. The franchises in Paris and Toulon pass 266,000 homes and have 76,000 subscribers. NTL is paying 350 million French Francs and will have exclusive licenses to provide analogue and digital television services. It also intends to offer telephone and Internet services in line with its UK (and Irish) strategy.
The 1G networks are fibre rich but share ducts with France Telecom's own services. The agreement includes duct sharing which is expected to allow NTL to easily and cost efficiently upgrade the systems to provide additional television services, telephony, and high speed Internet access.
Completion of the agreement is due in the autumn.
