If things slip any further it will be X-mas '00. Hope they are working overtime...... New material on digitaltelevision site..... An MPEG-2 Strategy We've selected MPEG-2 as our overall digital compression strategy because we think it offers the most scalable and open format and it integrates effectively with transmission and distribution systems. Our goal is to take images from the field to the viewer in its native compressed form with as little baseband compression as possible............. Studio Production We also are heading toward MPEG-2 for studio production and editing. This is a little harder to visualize, since there is little gear available, but we believe in MPEG-2 and hope that much innovation and work will be done around the format and open digital systems will be able to use it as easily as other compression such as DV or M-JPEG. Although we do foresee that MPEG-2 data file based systems, servers and transfers will be part of our future, this does not mean that we won't take advantage of streaming and SDTI transfers. It simply means that we desire the equipment to also provide file management and network connectivity. This is key for wide area connectivity and scaling......... digitaltelevision.com The main ongoing trend among cable operations and MSOs in New England, Ballantyne indicated was the retro-fitting of the cable infrastructure to be more fully digitally capable, and that this has meant "installing digital routing, digital master control and servers", he said. Another trend he sees forming is towards regional cable operation consolidation. Several of his New England regional cable clients have in fact centralized their hardware facilities on New York's Long Island. Asked about the potential growth of the hardware market in cable, Ballantyne said "cable expenditures are up, reflecting the gearing up for digital server-based operation and automation as well as towards streamlining operating costs."
