Full Coverage Compaq To Cut 900 Jobs HOUSTON (Reuters) - Compaq Computer Corp. (NYSE:CPQ - news) Monday said it was closing a New Hamsphire plant and consolidating North American production of business computers based on the Alpha microprocessor in its two remaining plants. A spokesman said the move would result in the loss of up to 900 jobs at its Salem, N.H. manufacturing facility, offset by hiring at the two existing plants in Fremont, Calif. and Houston. Manufacturing of high-end Alpha server systems will move to the Fremont and Houston plants over a transition period of six to nine months, beginning immediately, Compaq said. Alpha servers are computers used by companies to manage key business operations and for massive number-crunching tasks. Some of the employees affected in Salem will be offered a chance to relocate to jobs at either Fremont or Houston. An as-yet-undetermined number of new jobs will be created at the two remaining plants, Compaq said. ''To secure a competitive advantage for Compaq, we must simplify our supply chains and manufacturing operations wherever possible,'' Ed Straw, senior vice president for supply chain management, said in a statement announcing the move. ''The action announced today will reduce the number of high-end server manufacturing sites in North American by a third and help us streamline order fulfillment for our enterprise customers,'' he said.
