I believe the club you describe would be one which will not give the best results when chipping. If it does have greater loft than 9 iron it is too lofted to be chipping with and I will hypothesis that its "base" is too wide to properly chip with. It will bounce off turf when it hits rather than slide through the grass.

Let me explain why you want less loft on your chip shots. You achieve better control over the direction and length of the shot when the ball is rolling. Therefore you want to only get it airborne in order to avoid the longer grass of the fringe and greenside grass (wether it be 1st or 2nd cut). The sooner you get the ball rolling, the better your odds will be. Unless of course you are a left hander named Phil...

I will ask you to do this. When you go to practice next time spend 30 minutes working on the method using your 7,8 or 9 iron. After just 30 minutes try a comparison between the two clubs. I will give the new method a 75% chance of outperforming the old after just 30 min of practice. And that is without me there to really get your rolling...
