Stu,

(I will give it a try to explain what little I know.)

The virtual core is sort of a replacement for hardware that allows a lot of the "old" hardware to be replaced by programmable logic cores.

? Does this put them in competition with Broadcom (BRCM), PMC Sierra (PMCS), Level One (LEVL), etc.?

I think these will be customers for the products. I feel that this was a significant announcement that shows the VC division is producing product that will shortly be translated into revenue.

The best,

Marc

Stu,

I'm not sure what a core is. I think they're talking hardware here, aren't they?

"The company said the MAC core is the first offering in a planned family
of interconnect cores that will use the VCI standard. The core complies
with IEEE 802.3 and 802.3 specs and supports 10- and 100-Mbit/second
data transfer.

The core also supports both full- and half-duplex modes, offering
the CSMA/CD protocol for half-duplex operation and flow control (IEEE
802.3) for full-duplex operation.

According to Phoenix, the basic functionality of the core is fully
implemented in hardware, eliminating the requirement for software
drivers."

Stu,

Thanks for your comment and question, because I think it is very relevant. PTEC needs to get their message across so investors can understand what they sell. I bet 95% of the people who read that press release don't have a clue what it means, let alone understand what the potential for sales are.(Jules point)

Laurent,

Stop talking to engineers in the Press Releases. Stop talking alphabet soup and keep the message sweet and short like I suggest below.

The MAC core is embedded software that reduces the size, weight, power and complexities of ethernet products while significantly reducing the time to market.

Keep the message simple.
