It brings more business onto the Web where (Amazon garners the largest share) and out of bookstores where Amazon has no share.

Half off is a clearer business proposition to buyers than 40%.

Tae Kim, They do this (lower prices 10%) in an effort to drive the weak players out. I guess that would include bamm and some others. Its a part of the overall strategy, Dell did a lot of this in the early days and now Packard Bell etc. are gone.
