Way OT! SETI@Home is released! Come join us!

A cool project that I've been waiting for over a year is finally released! Search for extra-terrestrial life on your PC is finally here! Basically, if you run this you leave your computer on all the time and it uses your spare CPU cycles to analyze actual radio telescope data for signs of intelligent life. If they can get 100,000 computers to participate then they'll be able to analyze the whole radio spectrum. You can read more about the project here:

setiathome.ssl.berkeley.edu

I've created a "team" for us all to compete under, if you're interested. When you run the program for the first time, choose returning user and use et_finder@yahoo.com as your e-mail address. Joining as part of this team will allow us to attain much higher rankings in their statistics pages. Maybe we could be one of the top 100 teams worldwide?

Anyway, I just think it's a cooler thing to do than watching flying toasters with those spare CPU cycles. You can download the software (which runs either as a screen saver or all the time) from the above web site.

Let me know if you're joining machines under this id (I'd have no way of knowing otherwise; they don't send a confirmation e-mail or anything) or if you have any questions! I've coerced about 15 friends so far into joining our team so we're well under way, but we need more people! So send me an email at et_finder@yahoo.com if you're interested.

Now if there was just a way to get those "100 billion operations per second" to work for seti (I had to tie it into 3dfx somehow...)

Sorry for the off topic interruption...
