Edison is doing that here (MI, OH, IL, IN) as well. Too expensive to meet emissions standards using coal. In particular, Edison will use Natural Gas to meet peak energy demand this summer in Southeast Michigan (I think they are converting a coal plant).

arcticwarrior, And Public Service Company of Florida (New jersey?) just announced that they and Texas Utilities are building a new gas-fired power plant south of Odessa, Texas. As my friend at Enron noted, each year the corollation gets stronger that either a hot summer or a cold winter will spike gas demand. The reason is that all around North America gas-fired generating stations are being opened, partly to meet 1992 Rio Treaty emissions requirements in developed countries....
