China Blasts Western Free Press

BEIJING, May. 18, 1999 -- (Agence France Presse) China's Communist Party mouthpiece, The People's Daily, Tuesday blasted the Western press as a tool justifying the NATO bombing of Yugoslavia and questioned the veracity of reported widespread ethnic cleansing in Kosovo.

"Facts have already shown that their so-called 'freedom of the press' is one of the most important and beneficial tools for pushing forward hegemonism and power politics," the newspaper said in a signed editorial.

Western reports of Kosovo refugees and ethnic cleansing have "demonized" Yugoslavia and tricked western public opinion into supporting NATO's bombing campaign, it said.

The newspaper cited an example of western reports of Serbian atrocities in the village of Lachaka which were later proven false by an independent team of Finnish lawyers and doctors.

"This demonization of the enemy and cloaking hegemonism and armed aggression in legitimacy has already become the basic characteristic of the western media," it said.

China's state-controlled press has not reported on the ethnic cleansing and Serbian oppression in Kosovo, while ardently demanding that NATO end the bombing and respect the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Yugoslavia.

Daily editorials in the Chinese press have condemned the U.S. and NATO since the May 8 NATO bombing of the Chinese embassy in Belgrade. ( (c) 1999 Agence France Presse)
